An Hour in Minato Mirai

I wasn’t planning to explore Yokohama that day.

I was in town for a reunion with my old crew — one of those let’s finally all meet up things — and I got off the train a little early. Phone says the others are running late. Perfect. That’s exactly the kind of gap I love.

So I just… started walking. No map, no plan. Come with me.

First, a building that fills the sky

The Landmark Tower just appears. One second you’re walking past normal buildings, and then this enormous thing takes up the whole sky. Standing at the bottom of a tower like this — neck craned all the way back — still gets me every time. It’s 296 metres, and from down here it looks like it has no top.

There’s an observation deck near the top called the Sky Garden if you want the view from up there. But honestly? The view of it, from the ground on a grey cloudy day, is its own thing.

Keep going and the Cosmo Clock — the big Ferris wheel with a clock in the middle of it — turns up across the road, sitting there in the middle of the working city like it’s completely normal.

The sea and the city in one frame

A bit further and you get the view that always makes me smile: the masts of an old sailing ship, the Nippon Maru, standing right in front of a wall of glass office towers. Old and new, sea and city, stacked in one frame.

She’s a retired training ship — the kind sailors actually learned the ropes on — now sitting in her own little dock, beautifully kept. You can go aboard for ¥500. Wooden handrails, the rigging, the way the sails are put together; a hundred years ago people spent weeks at a time in there.

I like that two completely different eras of how people move around the world ended up parked next to each other here.

Where the city goes soft

A bit further and it softens. Grass, flowers, and then a gorgeous pair of red brick buildings — the Red Brick Warehouse. Over a hundred years old, originally customs warehouses, now full of small shops, cafés and events.

Here’s my actual tip though: don’t rush inside. Sit on the lawn out front first. On a slow afternoon people are just lying around, walking dogs, doing nothing in particular. After a few weeks of time zones and crew briefings, doing nothing in particular is a genuine luxury.

And then I got hungry

This is the part I get excited about. Tucked into a food hall I found a wonton noodle stall — chefs in red caps folding wontons by hand right in front of you, steam everywhere, locals packed shoulder to shoulder at the counter.

The board splits the broth into 清湯 (light) and 浓汤 (rich) and you point at what you want. Around ¥800–900.

This is the kind of place I’m always hunting for. Not the famous restaurant with a queue out front — the loud, bright, slightly chaotic counter where everyone around you is a regular.

Hand-folded wontons, a clear hot broth, a stool, twenty minutes to yourself. That’s the whole trip, right there.

Then the phone buzzed

Everyone’s here. Time for the reunion.

Maybe an hour, start to finish. No itinerary, no checklist. A tower, a ship, some bricks, and a really good bowl of noodles.

That’s the kind of Japan I want to show you. Not the must-see list — the in-between hour, where the good stuff actually lives. So next time you’ve got a gap before something, you know what to do. Go for a walk.

• Getting there: five minutes on foot from JR Sakuragicho, or ten from Minato Mirai station

同期会で横浜に来たついでに、集合まで時間が空いたので、ぶらっとお散歩。地図もなし、行き当たりばったり。これが一番好きな時間なんだよね。

電車をちょっと早く降りたら、「みんな遅れる」って連絡が来た。よし、と思った。こういうすきま時間がいちばんいい。

まず、空を埋める建物に出会う

ランドマークタワー（296m）。下から見上げると先っぽが見えないくらい大きい。下にいて「高さ」を感じるって、こういうことなんだ。

上の展望台「スカイガーデン」もいいけど、曇り空の日に下から見上げる迫力も、ほんとにおすすめ。

もう少し歩くと、道の向こうにコスモクロック（時計つきの観覧車）。働いてる街のど真ん中に、当たり前みたいな顔で立ってる。

海と都市が同じ絵に

日本丸。昔の練習帆船が、ガラス張りのビル群の真ん前に停泊してる。海の時代とビルの時代が一枚に収まる、みなとみらいらしい景色。

実際に乗ってみると（見学500円）、木の手すりとか、帆の構造とか。100年前の人たちが、ここで何十日も過ごしたんだ、って感じが伝わってくる。船内の見学もできるし、係の人の話も面白い。

「人がどうやって世界を移動してきたか」の全然違う2つの時代が、たまたま隣同士に停まってる。これがいいんだよね。

都市が柔らかくなる

赤レンガ倉庫。築100年超、元は税関の倉庫。今はお店やカフェ、イベントスペースになってる。

でも僕のおすすめは、中に入る前に、まず前の芝生でぼーっとすること。日差しと風があって、周りに人がいるけど誰も急いでない。時差とブリーフィングが続いたあとだと、何もしない時間っていうのは本気で贅沢なんだ。

ここでお腹が鳴る

ここが一番テンション上がったところ。フードホールで見つけた手包み雲呑麺のお店。赤い帽子の職人さんが目の前でワンタンを包んでて、湯気がすごくて、地元の人でカウンターがぎゅうぎゅう。

スープは 清湯（あっさり）と浓汤（こってり） から選べる。800〜900円くらい。

こういう、行列の名店じゃなくて地元の人が普通に通うカウンターが一番好き。うるさくて、明るくて、ちょっとごちゃっとしてて、まわりが全員常連。

手包みのワンタン、透き通ったスープ、カウンターの席、自分だけの20分。これだけで、もう十分。

そうこうしてたら連絡が来た

「みんな着いたよ」。

全部で1時間くらいのお散歩だった。決まったコースもチェックリストもなし。タワー、船、レンガ、そして一杯の雲呑麺。

こういう「予定と予定のすきま時間」にこそ、いい日本が転がってると思うんだ。次に何かの前に時間が空いたら、やることは決まってるよね。歩きに行こう。

• アクセス：JR桜木町駅から徒歩5分、またはみなとみらい線みなとみらい駅から徒歩10分

• 天気：曇りの日でも映える。天気よりも「時間に余裕がある時」が大事
