I Just Wanted to Sleep in a Round House

I want to sleep in a round house.

That was literally the whole plan. No bucket list, no itinerary, no “top 10 things to do in Awaji.” Somebody in my family kept seeing these round white dome tents and decided we needed to sleep in one. So one weekend in July we packed up the car and drove across the big bridge to Awaji Island.

Best travel decisions are the dumb ones. I stand by this.

Wait, where is Awaji Island?

Quick orientation for anyone outside Japan:

• Where: an island in the Seto Inland Sea, Hyogo Prefecture — hanging just below Kobe, connected by the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, one of the longest suspension bridges on the planet
• Famous for: onions (seriously, the island is proud of its onions), beef, seafood, and slow island time
• Getting there: about 1.5 hours by car from Osaka, or an express bus from Kobe-Sannomiya in about 80 minutes

It rarely makes it onto international Japan itineraries, which is exactly why it’s good.

The dome

We stayed at Glamping Terrace Awaji, up on the island’s quiet northern side. White domes scattered across a grassy field, each one sitting on its own wooden deck.

Ours had an orange door with a little onion mark printed on it. Of course it did. This island loves its onions and I love that about it.

Inside? Way more “round hotel room” than “tent.” Proper beds, air conditioning, and a hanging egg chair that everyone immediately fought over. There was a rotation system. It was not always respected.

One side of the dome is transparent, so you can lie in bed and watch the sky through the triangle frames. Lights off, it feels like a secret base. Ten out of ten, would be a kid again.

And the part that surprised me most: the dome came with its own private open-air bath. Proper hot-spring-style soaking, right on your deck, nobody else around.

Marshmallows, obviously

Dinner was BBQ on our own deck — gas grill, so zero campfire drama. Turn the knob and you’re an outdoor chef. My kind of camping.

Then came the main event: marshmallows. We stood around the grill watching them puff up like it was live sport. Someone burned theirs (not naming names). We squished the gooey ones into warm tortillas — crispy outside, molten inside — and everyone went quiet for a second. That’s how you know.

Post-marshmallow, a hot soak in the private bath under the evening sky. Glamping really said camping, but make it comfortable, and I respect that.

Golden hour, twice

This place runs on good light.

In the evening the sun drops behind the field and the white domes turn faintly orange. At night it goes properly quiet — just the deck lights glowing.

Then in the morning the sun comes back up right between the domes. I got up early for it and felt extremely smug about it.

Breakfast on the deck

Breakfast came in a basket: bagels, salad, fruit, juice, and Awaji Island yoghurt. We ate outside in the morning light, birds doing their thing.

Scientific fact: the same breakfast tastes three times better outdoors. I don’t make the rules.

Day two — bikes, sea, big bridge

After checkout we rented Trek crossbikes and cruised along the island’s northern coastline. Sea on one side, blue summer sky on top, basically no effort required.

From a hilltop lookout the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge stretched all the way across the strait — the same bridge we’d driven over the day before. There’s something quietly satisfying about looking back at the way you came in. We came from there. Yes we did.

The finale: onsen and a kaiseki lunch

Here’s the move that turned a good trip into a great one. On the way home we stopped at Hotel New Awaji, the island’s well-known onsen resort, for a day-use plan — kaiseki lunch plus hot springs, no overnight stay needed.

Kaiseki, if you haven’t met it yet, is Japanese multi-course dining: a parade of small, beautiful dishes, each arriving like a tiny event. Fresh island seafood, careful details, and that pleasant feeling of being looked after.

Then a long soak before the drive home. Post-lunch hot spring is an elite combination — you float out of the building. If you’re doing Awaji as a trip, do yourself a favour and end it like this.

And on the way out, of course: a mountain of Awaji onions for sale by the roadside. The island is not subtle about this and it shouldn’t be.

• About 1.5h by car from Osaka via the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge (15 min from Hokudan IC), or an express bus from Kobe-Sannomiya (~80 min)
• Domes sleep 2–6, with air conditioning and private open-air baths
• On-site: marshmallow toasting, food smoking, popcorn making

Hotel New Awaji — in Sumoto, on the east coast. Day-use plans let you do lunch and the onsen without staying the night. Worth building your drive home around.

「まあるい家に泊まってみたい」。

きっかけはそれだけ。やりたいことリストも、旅程も、「淡路島でやるべき10のこと」もなし。家族の誰かが白いドームテントの写真を見つけてきて、「ここ泊まりたい」って言い出したから、7月の週末に車に乗って、あの大きい橋を渡った。

旅のいい判断って、だいたいこういう雑なやつだと思う。

そもそも淡路島ってどこ？

海外から来る人向けにざっくり言うと、

• 場所：瀬戸内海の島。兵庫県で、神戸のすぐ下にぶら下がってる。明石海峡大橋でつながってて、あれは世界でも有数の長さの吊り橋
• 有名なもの：玉ねぎ（島がガチで誇ってる）、淡路牛、海の幸、そしてゆっくりした島の時間
• 行き方：大阪から車で約1時間半、神戸三宮から高速バスで約80分

海外の日本旅行のルートにはあんまり入ってこない。だからいいんだよね。

ドームのこと

泊まったのは島の北側、静かなエリアにある グランピングテラス淡路。芝生の広場に白いドームが点々と建ってて、それぞれが自分のウッドデッキの上に乗ってる。

うちのドームはオレンジの扉で、玉ねぎのマークが印刷されてた。そりゃそうだよね。この島は玉ねぎが好きだし、僕はそこが好き。

中に入ると「テント」というより「丸いホテルの部屋」。ちゃんとしたベッドがあって、エアコンもあって、吊り下げ式のエッグチェアがある。これは即取り合いになった。 交代制のルールができたけど、あんまり守られてなかった。

ドームの片側が透明になってて、ベッドに寝たまま三角のフレーム越しに空が見える。電気を消すと秘密基地みたい。子どもに戻れるやつ。

で、いちばん驚いたのがこれ。ドームに個別の露天風呂がついてる。 ちゃんとした温泉スタイルのお風呂が自分のデッキにあって、周りに誰もいない。

そしてマシュマロ

夕飯は自分のデッキでBBQ。ガスグリルだから火起こしのドラマは一切なし。つまみをひねれば野外シェフ。 僕はこういうキャンプが好き。

で、本番はマシュマロ。グリルを囲んで、膨らんでいくのをスポーツ中継みたいに見てた。誰かが焦がした（名前は伏せる）。とろっとしたやつを温かいトルティーヤに挟むと、外はパリッと中はどろっと。その瞬間だけ全員が黙った。 うまいときってそうなるよね。

マシュマロのあとは、夕方の空の下で露天風呂。グランピングって「キャンプ、ただし快適に」ってことなんだなと納得した。

ゴールデンアワーが1日2回ある

ここはとにかく光がいい。

夕方は太陽が芝生の向こうに落ちていって、白いドームがうっすらオレンジになる。夜は本当に静かで、デッキの灯りだけが点いてる。

で、朝はドームとドームのあいだから日が昇ってくる。それ目当てに早起きして、めちゃくちゃ得意げになった。

デッキで朝ごはん

朝食はバスケットで届く。ベーグル、サラダ、フルーツ、ジュース、淡路島のヨーグルト。朝の光の中、デッキで外で食べた。鳥が普通に鳴いてる。

同じ朝食でも、外で食べると3倍うまい。 これは科学的事実で、僕が決めたルールじゃない。

2日目 ── 自転車と、海と、あの橋

チェックアウトのあと、TREKのクロスバイクを借りて島の北側の海沿いを流した。片側が海で、上が夏の青空。ほぼ体力を使わない。

高台の展望台から見ると、明石海峡大橋が海峡をまたいで向こうまで伸びてた。前の日に自分たちが渡ってきた橋。「あそこから来たんだ」って自分の来た道を眺めるのは、地味にいい気分だった。

締めは、温泉と懐石ランチ

いい旅を最高の旅にしたのがこれ。帰り道に ホテルニューアワジ に寄って、日帰りプラン（懐石ランチ＋温泉）。泊まらなくていい。

懐石は、小さくてきれいな料理が次々に出てくるコース。島の魚介と、細かい仕事と、「もてなされてる」あの気持ちよさ。

そのあと帰る前にゆっくり温泉。昼食後の温泉は最強の組み合わせで、建物からふわふわ出てくることになる。 淡路島を旅程に入れるなら、締めはこれにしたほうがいいよ。

帰り道にはもちろん、道端に淡路島たまねぎの山。この島はそこを隠す気がまったくない。 それでいいと思う。
